A systematic review of natural experiments that included 11,500 patients found that new cycling infrastructure leads to meaningful increases in levels of physical activity for individuals living in proximity to new trails. We also provide some evidence that new trails foster increased rates of active transportation and cycling traffic compared to areas that did not receive a new trial. This is the most comprehensive empirical study of the impact of urban trails on measures of physical activity to date.
